# The evidence-scope map for nonfiction claims

A strong example can make a narrow claim feel universal. This map keeps evidence type, population, time, and uncertainty separate while reading nonfiction.

## Map the claim's reach

Save one page that makes the method useful, then complete the fields in your own words:

| Field | Prompt |
|---|---|
| **Claim** | What is being asserted in your own words? |
| **Evidence type** | Example, observation, experiment, survey, or synthesis? |
| **Scope** | Who, where, and when does the evidence cover? |
| **Uncertainty** | What remains unknown or unmeasured? |

Keep the page number as the route back to the source. Avoid copying a protected passage when a short paraphrase will do.

## Run the scope check

- Compare the claim's nouns with the evidence's actual population.
- Look for a time or place boundary that the prose smooths over.
- Write the smallest version of the claim the evidence clearly supports.

Write one working sentence:

> My current reading is ____________________________________________.

## Review rule

After the section, compare the author's conclusion with your smaller version. A difference is a question to verify, not automatic proof that the author is wrong.

## Boundaries

This is a private reading-reflection aid, not a quotation archive, plot substitute, academic citation, factual verification, or proof of an author's intention. For consequential claims, return to the full passage and verify outside facts independently.
