# The premise-bridge test for philosophy reading

A philosophical conclusion can seem surprising because the hidden work occurs in the bridge between premises. This test makes that bridge visible without reducing the argument to slogans.

## Lay out the bridge

Save one page that makes the method useful, then complete the fields in your own words:

| Field | Prompt |
|---|---|
| **Premise** | What starting claim does the author ask you to grant? |
| **Rule** | What principle moves from the premise toward the conclusion? |
| **Conclusion** | What follows if the bridge holds? |
| **Countercase** | What case pressures the rule rather than merely denying the premise? |

Keep the page number as the route back to the source. Avoid copying a protected passage when a short paraphrase will do.

## Test one joint

- Ask whether a descriptive premise is being used to reach a normative conclusion.
- Look for a term whose meaning shifts across the bridge.
- Strengthen the countercase until the author would recognize it as relevant.

Write one working sentence:

> My current reading is ____________________________________________.

## Review rule

Write the smallest bridge you still accept. The difference between that bridge and the author's version becomes a precise question for rereading or discussion.

This is a private reading-reflection aid, not a quotation archive, plot substitute, academic citation, factual verification, or proof of an author's intention. For consequential claims, return to the full passage and verify outside facts independently.
