# The translation-choice notice for translated literature

An unusual phrase in translation can carry rhythm, culture, ambiguity, or a deliberate refusal of smoothness. This notice preserves the question without judging a translator from one line.

## Notice the choice

Save one page that makes the method useful, then complete the fields in your own words:

|---|---|
| **Phrase type** | Idiom, syntax, register, name, or cultural term? |
| **Effect** | What does the wording make you feel or notice? |
| **Alternatives** | What smoother wording came to mind? |
| **Loss** | What might the smoother wording erase? |

Keep the page number as the route back to the source. Avoid copying a protected passage when a short paraphrase will do.

## Hold multiple causes

- Consider voice and rhythm before labelling wording awkward.
- Check the translator's note or edition context when available.
- Do not reverse-engineer the source language unless you actually know it.

Write one working sentence:

> My current reading is ____________________________________________.

## Review rule

If a similar choice recurs, decide whether it forms a pattern of voice. For comparison, consult another translation only after reading the passage in context.

## Boundaries

This is a private reading-reflection aid, not a quotation archive, plot substitute, academic citation, factual verification, or proof of an author's intention. For consequential claims, return to the full passage and verify outside facts independently.
