# The counterexample pocket for argumentative essays

A counterexample is most useful when it improves the boundary of a claim instead of ending the conversation. This pocket keeps the objection compact and testable.

## Build the pocket

Save one page that makes the method useful, then complete the fields in your own words:

| Field | Prompt |
|---|---|
| **Claim** | State the essay's claim as narrowly as possible. |
| **Case** | Name one plausible case that does not fit. |
| **Difference** | What feature makes the case different? |
| **Revision** | How could the claim change to include the difference? |

Keep the page number as the route back to the source. Avoid copying a protected passage when a short paraphrase will do.

## Test the objection

- Check whether the case actually meets the author's definitions.
- Avoid a rare exception if the claim is explicitly probabilistic.
- Prefer a revised claim that is clearer, not merely weaker.

Write one working sentence:

> My current reading is ____________________________________________.

## Review rule

After the essay, decide whether the counterexample defeats, limits, or strengthens the argument. Keep the author’s actual wording available for serious critique.
