# The character-motive crosscheck for spoiler-light reading

A character can look inconsistent when the real change is pressure, information, or loyalty. This compact crosscheck helps a physical-book reader notice motive shifts without copying lines or predicting the ending.

## Mark the decision page

Save the page where the character makes a choice that changes your impression. Then complete four short fields in your own words:

| Field | Prompt |
|---|---|
| **Want** | What does the character appear to want right now? |
| **Risk** | What could the choice cost them? |
| **Knowledge** | What do they know at this point in the story? |
| **Loyalty** | Who or what are they protecting? |

Do not write the outcome. The page number is the route back to the evidence.

## Run the crosscheck

Ask one question for each possible explanation:

- **Pressure changed:** Would the same person choose differently if the risk disappeared?
- **Information changed:** Did they learn something that makes the choice newly reasonable?
- **Loyalty changed:** Did their priority move from one person or promise to another?
- **Your reading changed:** Are you interpreting the same behavior through a new expectation?

Circle the explanation with the strongest page-level support. If two remain plausible, keep both instead of forcing an answer.

## Revisit after the next turning point

Return only when a later decision gives you new evidence. Add one sentence:

> I now think the earlier choice was mainly about __________ because __________.

The value is not predicting the plot. It is preserving how your understanding of the character changed.
