# The memory-distance pause for memoir

Memoir blends remembered experience, later interpretation, and narrative craft. This pause helps a reader notice those layers without treating uncertainty as dishonesty.

## Locate the remembering voice

Save one page that makes the method useful, then complete the fields in your own words:

| Field | Prompt |
|---|---|
| **Then** | What could the younger self perceive? |
| **Now** | What does the narrating self understand later? |
| **Source** | Is the moment memory, document, report, or reconstruction? |
| **Distance** | How much time and emotional change separates the voices? |

Keep the page number as the route back to the source. Avoid copying a protected passage when a short paraphrase will do.

## Read uncertainty fairly

- Notice explicit signals such as 'I remember' or 'I was told.'
- Separate a vivid scene from a claim of exact transcription.
- Ask how later knowledge changes the meaning, not whether memory behaves like a recording.

Write one working sentence:

> My current reading is ____________________________________________.

## Review rule

At the next retrospective passage, compare the distance. The goal is to read the memoir's method, not to diagnose the author.
