# The cognitive-load reset for a difficult chapter

Sometimes a chapter feels impossible because too many unresolved names, claims, or timelines are active at once. This reset reduces load without pretending the book became simple.

## Identify the load

Save one page that makes the method useful, then complete the fields in your own words:

| Field | Prompt |
|---|---|
| **Names** | Which people or terms must stay active? |
| **Thread** | What question is this section trying to answer? |
| **Switch** | Where did time, speaker, or argument change? |
| **Residue** | What earlier uncertainty is still consuming attention? |

Keep the page number as the route back to the source. Avoid copying a protected passage when a short paraphrase will do.

## Choose one reset

- Write a five-word label for the current thread.
- Park one nonessential question for the chapter end.
- Return to the last page where the speaker, time, and purpose were all clear.

Write one working sentence:

> My current reading is ____________________________________________.

## Review rule

Read one more page and test whether the thread label still fits. If not, adjust the label rather than forcing concentration through a wrong map.
