# The theme-tension pair for literary discussion

Themes become flatter when reduced to a single word such as freedom or family. A tension pair keeps two values in conflict and ties them to a specific scene.

## Build the pair

Save one page that makes the method useful, then complete the fields in your own words:

| Field | Prompt |
|---|---|
| **Value A** | What good does one choice protect? |
| **Value B** | What competing good does it threaten? |
| **Carrier** | Which character or image carries each value? |
| **Pressure** | What forces the scene to choose or compromise? |

Keep the page number as the route back to the source. Avoid copying a protected passage when a short paraphrase will do.

## Keep both sides alive

- Phrase both values sympathetically before judging them.
- Find one cost that each side tends to ignore.
- Ask whether the scene resolves the tension or merely relocates it.

Write one working sentence:

> My current reading is ____________________________________________.

## Review rule

Use the pair as a discussion question: 'What would count as a fair trade between A and B here?' Return to the page before generalizing about the whole book.
